Tower Hills Streak 9 26 02 Tower Hill’s last defeat was at the hands of Wilmington Christian on Saturday, November 13, 1999, in a quarterfinal match of the state tournament. The 8th seeded Warriors upset the top seeded Hillers 3-1. Danae Chambers scored twice and Sarah Raniszewski once to avenge the Warrior’s 3 – 2 loss in the 1998 state final to Tower Hill. Since that defeat, THS had gone unbeaten in 43 games, 42 – 0 – 1. 20 – 0 in 2000, 19 – 0 – 1 in 2001 and 3 – 0 in 2002. St Andrew’s last defeated Tower Hill in the regular season. Tuesday’s 1 – 0 loss to Sanford, no doubt, brought back painful memories. Both games were played at Tower Hill and in both the Hillers dominated territorially and statistically but couldn’t put the ball in the cage. In 1999, THS had a 24 –2 and 13 – 0 advantage in shots and corners. Julie Teach was the hot keeper, turning away 17 shots and winning the News Journal’s Athlete of the Week award in the process. Emily Pfeiffer was the goal-scoring heroine. In 1999, St Andrew’s was a very strong team. Ranked #5 the day of the game, SAS was seeded 4th in the tournament and advanced to Rullo by beating Cape Henlopen and Caesar Rodney before losing to eventual champion Wilmington Christian 3 – 2 in 3 OTs. Tuesday the stats were also one-sided, shots 17 – 3 and corners 14 – 4. But it’s only goals that count and Jill Levinson scored it. Kim Brown was perfect in the cage. The 1999 defeat came in the fifth game of the season. Tower Hill won the remaining 11 regular season games in 1999, all 16 in 2001, 15 in 2001, while drawing one, and three in 2002. The final tally 45 – 0 – 1. |
