A short piece this week. I just want to get what I have up here so
it looks like I am doing some work.
It’s still way early and I’m still not quite warmed up to the
new season yet. But since the tv show requires that I head out to
shoot new material every week, I can sense that the spirit is
beginning to come back, although a little slowly.
I caught Caravel Academy’s first football game of the year. They
were taking on the Avon Grove PA Red Devils from West Grove. The Red
Devils were playing their first ever varsity football game and to them
it was like the Super Bowl, much like the Houston Texans this past
Sunday.
The Bucs lost some 21 kids from their roster from a year ago. There
were a whole bunch of transfers that decimated the team. Remaining on
the team were five seniors and listed with those seniors on the roster
were 10 8th graders.
The Bucs do have a decent looking athlete in sophomore QB Will
Rollins. He completed enough passes to suggest that he has some poise
while being chased around due to the lack of an experience front line.
Another sophomore who showed some talent was 6’1" 180 lb Jarrod
Wright. He scored one of the Bucs touchdowns and made a nice backfield
tackle from his linebacker position where he worked through four
different Red Devils to make.
I was most impressed by the junior receiver Jamaur Johnson though. He
caught four passes in the game, all in heavy traffic over the middle
of the defense. He is listed at 5’10" 130. Let’s get that kid
eating some cheeseburgers or something.
I visited the Goldey Beacom College Volleyball team this past week
as the Lightning were playing host to the Rams of West Chester
University. Head Coach Rich Bowers only has 8 players on his roster
and only 7 of them played in this match. The Lightning were crushed by
graduation and the non-return of a couple of key players which left
the Lightning without a legitimate setter.
Loria Bafundo, a 6’1" middle blocker was forced to do some of
the play making, which is a role she probably hasn’t had to play
since she was a child. I thought perhaps that freshman Clare Phillips
might have been someone to convert into that role especially since she
has four years to play there. But Phillips spent her time defending
and doing some outside hitting (which is where I thought Bafundo
should have been.)
The other local freshman on the Lightning is Ashley Hultberg, also
from St. Elizabeth’s. She didn’t look totally comfortable yet, but
that will be just a matter of time. The playing time she gets now
because of the small roster will allow her to improve rapidly.
Erica LaBar, the former field hockey player of the year in
Delaware, has scored 3 goals and recorded one assist for the U of DE
in just four games. Two of those were game winners including one
overtime goal.
The North Carolina Tar Heel Field Hockey team is sporting a heavy
lineup of Delawareans. Meredith Keller from Tower Hill, Alison Stewart
from Mt. Pleasant (the 1998 Delaware Sports Athlete of the Year),
Amber Chambers from Dover, Alex Otto form Tower Hill, and Kerry
Falgowski from St. Marks are all starting for the Tar Heels. NC is off
to a slow start at 2-2. Falgowski has three goals so far this year.
See, I told ya it was going to be a short one. Feel free to pass on
some inside information or something so I can add more meat to the
stew here.
