How about that Tower Hill girl’s soccer team
so far this year? They are undefeated with a just a tie to A.I. duPont
preventing a perfect season to date. The tie to A.I. duPont was
impressive enough, but I thought the win against Newark was huge. It
makes them a serious threat to reach the final round of the state
tournament where St. Marks should be waiting.
Give Hiller head coach Joe Mills the Coach of the Year award now.
The Hillers, however, are now without freshman
Nikki White whose season ended as a result of an ACL tear that will
require surgery in the next few weeks. The recovery time is expected to
be 6-9 months, which will jeopardize her field hockey season in the fall
and possibly the start of the basketball season also. White has a
promising athletic future with Tower Hill having been a varsity starter
on all three teams. She scored a goal in the state field hockey
championship for the perennial power.
I had a chance to see the Caesar Rodney –
A.I. duPont soccer game as evidenced by the pictures on the web site. I
received quite a few letters about that particular game after mentioning
the Megan Collins red card incident.
The letters that were sent here were from local soccer fans from a
variety of areas from around the state. They basically were meant to
alert me to the general nature of the Riders type of play on the field.
There wasn’t a single complimentary letter in the bunch and the
consensus seemed to be that I was mistaken to imply that the Collins
foul on Kristin Ross was an accident.
The trouble with all of the letters relating to that specific incident
was that THEY WERE ALL WRONG. I have the TAPE. So leave me alone about
it. Collins wasn’t even looking at Ross on the play and, in fact, it
was Ross who accidentally tripped Collins on the play. It was just a
total accident.
Now this is not to say that I disagreed with the assessment of the
Riders play during the rest of the game. I saw one player try to kick a
Tiger in the back that I thought that was worthy of a red card on
principal but only seemed to warrant a yellow card; that was another
poor call in the game.
The Tigers I talked to on the field afterward seemed to think that the
game was rough. There was some more kicking and tripping and holding and
tugging and name-calling and all of that other fun stuff. The players
didn’t seem to mind; it is a legitimate style of play and good
refereeing will normally deal with the rough play as warranted. The only
real reason to even mention the Collins red card in the first place
though, is because it was called an intentional foul, which resulted in
a serious injury to Kristin Ross. That would mean that the state’s
all-time leading scorer intentionally injured the player who was her
shadow all game long. But it just wasn’t the case and I will say it
and don’t care who wants to challenge me on it because I HAVE THE
EVIDENCE.
Even so, some cowardly moron called my office
and left me a message stating that I was on a "witch hunt" (ya
think it was a ref?) and wouldn’t even leave his name. Whoever that
was should find a new hobby.
Ok, I am ready to talk about Steve Baker, the
now ex-head coach of the Caravel Academy softball team. Most of you have
already read the news either in the Newark Post or the News Journal, so
you can skip this part if you need.
I’ve done my own investigation here (being an ex-investigator, it
comes easy) and without going into great detail, it does pretty much
appear that a man that has worked at that school for 16 years and
developed a nationally ranked program, got the shaft.
I should just stop there because that truly is the conclusion. But what
it does bring to mind is something that I’ve been babbling about for
some time now and that is how the people who coach at high school levels
and below are treated like absolute dirt. I’m talking about people who
basically volunteer hours upon hours of time in their lives to help
children succeed in athletics and in life.
Do you have any idea what a high school coach gets paid during a season?
Depending on the school system that figure can range between 1500 and
5000 dollars. After subtracting expenses that aren’t reimbursed by any
school system or most parents of the children the coaches deal with, the
coaches are all basically losing money. Not only are they losing money
but losing time with their own families. And for what? A pat on the back
sometimes or the occasional appreciative smile of an athlete, that’s
about it. Sometimes a coach wins a championship along the way and all of
the kids sign a ball for him or her.
Other times though, the coach is the bad guy. He (just using one pronoun
to illustrate now, ok) is the guy responsible for your little scrub not
getting enough playing time. He is the guy who is keeping your precious
little monster from signing a pro contract. He is the guy who gets the
blame for every loss. He is the guy who "doesn’t know what he is
doing."
He just also happens to be the guy who is calling college coaches for
players whose parents won’t even do it. He is the guy who is
organizing fundraisers because there isn’t enough money for new
uniforms in the budget one year. He is the guy who stays at the field
while his dinner is getting cold waiting for an athletes parents to come
pick up THEIR OWN CHILD.
He is the guy who has to be the disciplinarian when all of the children
are together occasionally acting out like a wild pack of wolves. He is
the guy who will decide the punishment (that most teams have agreed upon
ahead of time) for those who decide to break rules. He is also somehow
then the guy who gets the blame when the punishment was not up to the
liking of a parent whose little darling was the offender. Never mind
that children need to be responsible for their own actions to begin,
that never seems to an issue.
Am I getting through at all here? Am I making any sense?
All I know is that the Delaware high school softball community is now
without one of its true treasures. A man who shifts his work schedule
every softball season and wakes up at 4 in the morning so he can get
done with work and get to the fields by 2 and then home by 8 every day.
It has lost a man who talks about the players on his teams as if they
were his own children. It has lost a good man who wasn’t even going to
coach this year but was talked into doing it by his players and his
employers.
We wish Steve Baker and his assistant coaches, who also left Caravel as
a result of this situation, all of the best. We will miss you all here
at Delaware Sports. We won’t forget your accomplishments and your
efforts because we know what you did and we appreciate what you have
done and what you have meant to the sport. We won’t let anyone else
forget either.
Ok, so I was a little more controversial this
week so far. That’s the way it goes; I’m chemically imbalanced so
you’ll never know what you’ll get. But now you will get some of our
top performances from when I wrote last.
