Bits
and Pieces 6
We will do more feature stories in our newspaper that will
begin to be distributed in November. Quite frankly, I'm not too fond of
writing (and not all that good) so that's why I don't do a whole lot on
the website. But the newspaper/newsletter is a different thing. The
website is a hobby, the other thing is more of a job/business and there
are a certain amount of pages to fill.
We still are looking for people brave enough to contribute
stories, or notes, or whatever to the website. There are a couple of
students that are preparing to make debuts both here and in the paper,
but we could always use more. (Remember that I don't like to write, so
there is PLENTY of room.) Even those writers out there that write
for other publications can contribute. Come on, you know you want to.
Use a fake name or something, I won't tell. You know that the
restrictions placed upon you by your paper are driving you nuts and you
have SO much more to say. So, go for it, write to your hearts content
right here!
Keep those nominations for All-heart team members coming. Near
the end of the Fall season we will announce our first-ever team.
Football bits.....
I was correct about one team rising to the top of the heap that
many people didn't think would. The Dover Senators are 5-0 after
dumping St. Marks 27-14. Pierre Bowers rushed for 245 yards against
the Spartans. The state's most powerful runner, receiver Jason Lilly,
caught a 47 yard touchdown pass in the game.
This Lilly kid is an amazing runner. He holds the state record
for the 400 meter dash, and is the state champion in the indoor 200 as
well. He is just a junior, a great kid, and has a great future.
Three undefeated teams in Henlopen North; Dover, Sussex
Central, and Cape Henlopen.
At least one of them goes down Friday night as Cape hosts
Sussex Central. With the Senators taking on Sussex Tech, there should
still be two left after this weekends play. Next Friday, Sussex
Central takes on Dover.
Andrew Swarter ran for 195 yards for St. Elizabeth against
Archmere as the Vikings improved to 5-0 beating the Auks 34-0. The
Vikes have outscored their opponents 90-0 in the past two weeks. They
travel to Salem N.J. this Saturday before returning to take on St.
Marks. Their win against the Spartans last year was one of the best
games that I saw.
Tykee Perry rushed for 113 yards for Cape Henlopen against
Wicomico. Nd.
Woodbridge QB Jamil Young passed for 296 yards as the Blue
Raiders improved to 4-1 in a 34-28 win against Laurel.
Ian Hudson scored four touchdowns for Delmar against Seaford in
a 53-3 win.
Dyshee Pierre had a 142 yard rushing performance for Glasgow
against A.I. duPont. The Tigers are still looking for their first win
of the year.
Smynra's Mike Pennewell ran for 308 yards and scored four
touchdowns for the Eagles as they pummeled Polytech 35-6. Pennewell
had touchdown runs of 39, 72, 62, and 43 yards.
Tatnall's Laird Stabler rushed for 201 yards as the Hornets
beat Tower Hill 20-8.
Soccer bits.....
The Spartans 41 game winning streak came to an end when they
lost to Holy Cross, N.Y. 1-0 in an overtime game. The Spartans outshot
Holy Cross 15-5. The last team to beat the Spartans was also an out of
state team (Chestnut Hill, Pa.)
Just when Seaford entered our top ten lists and Wilmington
Christian was ready to get bounced out, the Warriors handed the Blue
Jays their first loss of the year. A 5-0 loss as well.
Dover and Newark battled to a 1-1 tie and the Yellowjackets
nearly worked the Senators for their first loss of the year. Newark
outshot Dover 18-8.
Volleyball bits.....
It will be a shame, again, if the Pandas of Padua don't make
the state tournament this year. They can't seen to win a game inside
the traditionally tough Catholic Conference, but they can't seem to
lose outside of it.
When we start to think of who might be the volleyball player of
the year, we have to start thinking of Lauren DiSabatino from St.
Elizabeth. But she stands out greatly on her Viking team while equally
talented players on St. Marks might cancel each other out.
Lindsay McDonough, Laura Calosi, Liz Hubbard, Kelly Papili, and Leah
DenHoed could all stand out, like DiSabatino does, on other teams.
This Catholic Conference is so tough that some of these
talented players might be left out of the mix when it comes time for
the all-state teams to be picked also. Since a certain number of
players from each conference are chosen for final consideration for
the all-state team, a player or two who might not really be one of the
six best players in the state could end up on the team.
With that in mind, take those five players that I just
mentioned and then think of these; Colleen Sherk from Concord, Alexis
Henderson from Ursuline, Katie Greevy (first-teamer last year) from
Ursuline, Joanna Holsten from Archmere, Lindsay Miller (first-team
last year) from William Penn, Danielle Kerns from Brandywine, and Ann
Underwood from Dickinson. These are all good players from just a few
teams. Who will be left out? And I haven't even mentioned anyone from
Sanford, Newark, or anyone from downstate. It will be a tough series
of choices with many deserving people left out of the mix when it's
all over.
Lindsay Miller has been playing with an ailment that sometimes
blurs her vision. She has been feeling pressure behind her eyes, but
has been playing between doctor's appointments, and helped lead
William Penn to an upset win over the previously unbeaten Brandywine
Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are tough defensively, and run a tight offense,
but lack power. Their big hitter, Jenn Joseph is recovering from a
broken wrist.
Speaking of ailments, Ursuline's Katie Greevy was out of the
Raider lineup against an undefeated Villa Maria, Pa squad. Without
Greevy, the Raiders struggled while getting swept in two games. The
match still will gather two tournament points for Ursuline though.
These are, perhaps, earned points.
Field Hockey bits.....
Turf Bowl went over well at Rullo Stadium last weekend. A great
top ten match between Cape Henlopen and Wilmington Christian went to
undefeated Vikings 1-0 to vault them into the two hole in our top ten.
Casey Cahill scored the lone goal of the game in the first period and
the Vikings fended off eight Warrior penalty corners.
St. Marks continues to roll on. They beat Ursuline in the Turf
Bowl 3-0 and have only lost to Tower Hill so far this year.
William Penn blasted Brandywine 5-1 in a Flight A matchup. The
Dogs were out of this game early.
Delmar shows they are for real as they tie Cape Henlopen in a
Henlopen Conference game. Both teams scored once in the first half and
then played out scoreless. Both teams remain loss-less.
Cross Country bits.....
The St. Marks Spartans still look for real as their combined
times were good enough to be the best Delaware school in the
Salesianum invitational. The Spartans won the boy's "B"
pool.
Kyle Berseth ran the best time for Delaware with a 17:33 for
St. Marks.
The Brandywine girls team was the other Delaware winning team
in that race. They took the girls "B" pool. St. Marks, in
the "A" pool for girls, finished sixth.
The state's best high school girl runner, Meredith Lambert
finished second in the girls "C" pool behind Julia Pudlin
from the Baldwin School in Pennsylvania. Pudlin's time was a new
course record of 18:57 at Brandywine Creek State Park. She broke the
record set in last year's state championship by Caesar Rodney's Jill
Hajec of 19:33. Lambert's time was 19:49.
Jenn Kutney finished third overall, and first for a Delawarean
in her division for Brandywine. Fellow Bulldog Alison Sanchez
continues to be the number two runner for Brandywine and she finished
9th overall and second in Delaware in pool B.
The state championship is going to be one for the books. I
can't wait to watch the D 1 boy's race as St. Marks looks to topple
the Sallies dynasty for at least one year. I am looking forward to
watching Meredith Lambert and Ursuline's Colleen Taylor battle for an
individual title. It's all fun stuff. And, it's all coming sooner than
we think.
