There is one week down and eight to go in the final season of the 2000-2001 high school sports year. Here are some notes from around the state in a variety of sports. Listed in each little section are the athletes who stood out in certain games for reaching certain game totals and also notes of special games.

Boy’s Tennis bits

The Auks of Archmere went through their first two dual meets without losing a match. They opened up with a 5-0 shutout over Glasgow but then went on to shut out St. Andrews by the same score. The Saint loss was their first since 1999 and since the Auks were ranked second going into that match against the number one, they left it as the number one team.

Girl’s Track bits

Half of the Ursuline student body runs track, it seems, and they started their outdoor season on fire. The Raiders knocked off the considerably smaller-sized team of St. Elizabeth 101-31 and

St. Marks began their season with an 81-46 win over their rivals from Newark. Susan Neuman won the 100 and 300 hurdles, and the triple jump to lead all point scorers with 15.

Boy’s Track bits.

Newark knocked off St. Marks to take their first meet of the season 83-54. Omar Rogers and Isaac Wolkiewicz began their assault on the counties shot putters and discus throwers splitting the two wins between themselves.

Salesianum opened up with a big win against Dover 98-43. The Senators ran without Jason Lilly but even with him in the lineup Dover would have fell that day. The Sals finished the first week of Spring with a 4-0 record.

Softball bits

Padua’s Gina Madeline opened up the 2001 season with a 10-strikeout shutout performance over Archmere and went 3-3 with a home run. Kendy Russell drove in 4 runs in the Pandas 9-0 win.

Caravel’s Jackie Homiak opened up the Bucs season striking out 12 Dickinson Rams as the Bucs won 7-0.

Archmere’s Nicky Dalphon struckout ten Polytech Panthers when the Auks won their first game of the year 2-0.

Indian River’s Cara Deldeo opened up the Indians season by throwing a no-hitter against St. Marks in a 2-1 win. Deldeo also had the game’s only hit and scored the winning run of the game.
The next day Deldeo and the Indians had to take on the defending champions at Caravel on a cold, and windy day. The Indians scored the first run of the game but Caravel’s Megan Richardson displayed her unique blend of power and speed undoing the Indians shot at an upset. Richardson and Deldeo are both headed to St. Joe's next year to play ball. Deldeo has 12 strikeouts to Jackie Homiak’s 11.

Speaking of St. Joe’s, Dana Travis, the St. Marks grad, is 2-2 on the mound at last check. Her last victory came in a two-inning, six-strikeout relief performance.

Also playing for St. Joe’s from Delaware is Glasgow graduate Kristin Nau. She is a junior captain of the team who last year set a St. Joe’s season record for sacrifice hits with 22.

Brandywine’s Jenn Joseph opened up the Bulldogs season with a grand slam against A.I. duPont in a 30-0 win in which she also struck out eight batters. She followed up that performance with 17-strikeout game against McKean and hit her second homer of the young season.
