Bits
and Pieces 14
with Marshal Manlove
Ok, I'm officially tired of looking at that last
piece myself. Particularly after saying that Sanford was in for some
rough times this year and have started off 5-0.
But, as I've said before, if anyone could actually make these
predictions with any true level of accuracy, they would make a living
making predictions, and do nothing else.
I've truly stared at this page for a couple of weeks now
wondering just how to articulate some of the things that have gone on
here at Delaware Sports recently. Or, perhaps it's best to say, things
that have NOT gone on here recently.
First of all, I'm sad to report that the newspaper is now
officially dead, again, and that I will be reimbursing money to all
those who were gracious enough to purchase subscriptions from me. This
has been a source of pure frustration for a variety of reasons.
The newspaper had to go because it was far too difficult to
handle by myself with everything that I'm into. I was promised more
help than I actually received, and the fact that a large sponsor went
out of business on us meant that I would eventually have to pay for
printing the newspaper by myself on top of it. That was physically
going to be impossible since I am down to working a part time job and
now also have to pay for TV air time.
I did acquire new times slots and was all set to begin
broadcasting five days a week in the New year, but it seems that the
other sponsor I had for that decided to go back on their word that
they were going to guarantee that the new times slots would be paid
for. But that's ok, it's not the first promise that has ever been
broken to me since Delaware Sports began, but my list of people that I
can no longer trust anything that comes out of their mouth has grown
larger.
So there goes the expanded coverage as well.
What does this mean? It means a vacation for me! YES!
Next week will be vacation time here at Delaware Sports, so there
won't be any score updates for a while.
After the New Year rolls in, I will be diving head first into
the Diamond State Games operations and working on this website a
little more with the DSG my top priority.
Delaware Sports, the TV show, will be going through a bit of a
change in the New Year. We will be covering more college events. One
of the bottom line problems with the TV show, and the newspaper, has
been a lack of interest from the business community in high school
sports. Check the News Journal out as an example if your skeptical.
How many ads do you see dedicated strictly to supporting high school
sports? One, on the Athlete of the Week, is the correct answer. The
News Journal has what I simply do not - a massive sales force and a
massive labor force and many other sections to sell to advertisers. At
Delaware Sports, I am the sales guy (not particularly my strong point
if I even have one to begin with) the bulk of the labor force and only
have one section. It is generally acknowledged by newspaper people
that this type of paper is difficult to run successfully. I liked that
type of challenge. Never met a challenge (besides stuff relating to
heights) that I didn't like so it was worth a shot. (Would have worked
with a competent sales staff and some more help though.)
Getting pats on the back only take me so far. For five years I
have been doing this and have been having a great time. But I've also
lost 75,000 dollars because of it so I need to shift gears a little
bit. I'm not totally certain that airing college events on the TV show
is the answer, but airing regular season high school events is no
longer practical. I'll stick with the championship games in high
school though, just for regular season events it will be college.
I'll get back to regular weekly pieces in here after the New
Year. In the meantime wish me a happy 39th birthday. It will be the
last birthday that I officially celebrate since I will be holding on
tightly to my 30's.
