The Unknown
Tower Hill played the best hockey in 2005, so when the top-seeded Hillers won their 15th state championship Saturday, it was not unexpected. However, that was not the conventional wisdom in August when graduation had left Tower Hill with five huge holes to fill. That was before Coach Adair unleashed her newcomers on an unsuspecting state.
First-year varsity players were crucial to Tower Hill’s tournament run. Senior GK Stephanie Rutkowski allowed a state-best five goals all season, the fewest at Tower Hill in years. The new field players combined for 28 goals, well over half of Tower’s total, and seven of ten Tower goals scored in the tournament. Freshman Mary Hobbs, the Spartan slayer, led the team in scoring with 11 goals and 3 assists. Senior Caroline Campbell was tied for second with 10 goals and 3 assists. Junior midfielder Mahi Trivellas was instrumental on the Hillers’ penalty corners and scored tournament goals against Concord and Brandywine. Fellow junior Grier Tumas played well in the midfield. Freshman Meghan Lyon scored three goals on the season and added depth to the attacking line. Without their contributions, #15 would still be on hold.
Jackie Ciconte certainly had an eventful weekend with a pair of game-winning goals, but, sad to say, she was the only Delawarean in the D1 Final Four this season, unlike the 2000 Final Four when the four teams included ten players from Delaware.
