Bears compete at NCAA Regionals

 

CARLISLE, Pa. – Sophomore Pat O’Neill (Ardsley, PA/LaSalle) finished 30th out of 279 runners overall in the 8,000-meter men’s race to lead the Ursinus men at the 2005 NCAA Division III cross country Mideast Regionals at Dickinson on Saturday.

            O’Neill made the All-Region team with his 30th-place finish, missing the national championships by three spots. He ran in 26:58 to help the Bears finish 29th out of 40 teams with 828 points, while the women recorded their highest team rank by running 25th out of 42 teams. The women were led by freshman Liz Brenna (Drexel Hill, PA/Academy of Notre Dame), who finished 77th with a time of 24:55.4.

            Centennial Conference (CC) rival Haverford won the men’s event followed by Carnegie Mellon in second and Allegheny in third. All three teams qualified for the NCAA championships next weekend.

            For the men, Chris DeLeon (Lawrence Harbor, NJ/Old Bridge) finished second on the squad and 151st overall with a time of 29:20.6. Joe Szymanski (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) ran in 30:51.3, while Eric Wickersham (Hockessin, DE/St. Mark's) closely followed by crossing the line in 30:59.3 for 203rd and 207th overall, respectively.

            On the women’s side, host team and CC rival Dickinson won the event while conference rival Haverford took second.

            Lynne Erikson (Havertown, PA/Haverford) came in second for the women placing 92nd overall with a time of 25:06.9. Sara McNally (Drexel Hill, Upper Darby) finished 106th overall in 25:23.6 and Stephanie Rogman (Schnecksville, PA/Central Catholic) came in fourth on the team, running in 26.58.3 for 172nd.

             Freshman Stephanie Weir (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock North) rounded out the Bears’ top five, finishing in 27:52.6.
