Vikings reclaim lacrosse crown

Polytech High School-Woodside, DE: After a defeat in last years state high school boys lacrosse tournament by a 15-14 score and a 12-8 defeat earlier in the year, the Vikings of Cape Henlopen
High School defeated the Hornets of Tatnall School by a 19-9 score to take the 2001 Boys State Lacrosse Title. The Vikings were paced by Steve Conlon and Joe Vavala who had five goals a piece and Steve Welsh who had four.

Cape's last state title was in 1998 when they defeated Tatnall by a 14-3 score.

During an earlier regular-season matchup this year, the Vikings were up by an early 4-1 lead
but Tatnall recovered with a come-from-behind victory. Today it was a whole
different ball game as they took an early 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Tatnall scored its first goal in the second quarter on a Rob Howard shot with an assist from Justin Mason. The Vikings answered back
with 6 more goals to take a 13-1 halftime lead going into the locker room.

In the third quarter, Tatnall answered with 3 goals to pull within 13-4 before Cape took control off the faceoffs and defended the Hornets very well on the defensive side of the field.
