The Unknown Field Hockey Observer
The Blue Hens have found California to their liking with a pair of OT victories. In Saturday’s season opener, my 2004 POY, Casey Howard took three minutes to find her first college cage and three minutes of extra time to score his first collegiate game winner as the Hens topped Pacific 3-2. In case you are curious, Ms Howard took three games to score her first goal for the Riders way back in 2001, a big one vs. Delmar. Stephanie Swain scored in Sunday’s 2-1 OT triumph over the Cal Bears. For the Hens to complete their California Challenge unbeaten, they will have to overcome Stanford’s Delaware Connection, Julia Drewes and Jess Zutz, who combined on the Cardinal’s only goal in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Miami. Michelle Huynh-Ba scored the game’s first goal and The Magpie, Maggie Giddens, collected the OT GW as Michigan State advanced to the final in the Champions Invitational with a 4-3 win over host Louisville. Hofstra’s GK Jessica Cowperthwait enjoyed a quiet weekend, stopping a combined five shots while picking up victories over Rhode Island and LaSalle. Jessica Zutz scored on an assist from Julia Drewes as the two Delawareans combined for the lone goal in Stanford's loss to Miami of Ohio. Jackie Ciconte unleashed a ten-shot barrage, finding wood once, in the Terps’ 5-2 win at Northwestern. Ashley Judge recorded the stick stop assist as UNC edged Iowa 1-0, as the ACC emphatically won the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Whitney Wells’ goal was the only bright spot for Richmond in a 3-1 home loss to American. Katie Stevenson picked up an assist in a 1-1 weekend for the Temple Owls. Dom Scott scored in the game’s 99th minute as East Stroudsburg nipped Bellarmine, 4-3. Junior Dawn Eddis (Delaware Valley) and senior Kate Lester (Washington & Lee) have been chosen team captains for the 2005 season.
