SEPTEMBER 28, 2005 "BETTER EVERYDAY" The Official Newsletter of Guilford College Volleyball Important Dates 9/27 @ Lynchburg 6:30 PM 9/29 vs. NC Wesleyan 7:00 PM Guilford Splits Matches—Streak Ends! The Guilford College Volleyball Team split it matches last week with Emory & Henry College and Chowan College. In downing Chowan, the Quakers ended a seven match skid. Guilford played host to Emory & Henry last Tuesday. This was the team’s second meeting of the year, with a depleted Guilford team losing to the Lady Wasps at the Greensboro Tournament in early September. The Quakers hoped that a healthy team would provide a better match this time around. Starting off slowly, Guildford dropped the first match 22-30. Not down, the Quakers returned strong in the second game and held on to win the game 30-28. The home crowd now awake with a Quaker victory, got behind its team even more. Game three proved to be pivotal. Close through much of the game, Emory & Henry pulled away late going up 25-22. After settling, Guilford went on a run of its own, capturing back late game momentum that looked to take the team to victory. However, after a long rally, the Quakers in the midst of winning the long point got out of rotation, and were caught two points later. Wind taken form their sails, the team dropped the third set 28-30. Not able to find the momentum again, Guilford dropped the fourth set 17-30, and the match 1-3. On paper, it was Guilford’s best played match of the season. The team hit for a season-high .229, and passed out of serve receive very well. Becca Jones directed the Quaker offense with 47 assists. Brittani Leathern and Emily Becher were on the receiving end of the majority of Jones’ assists and tallied 19 and 17 kills respectively. In addition to the kills, both hit for great percentages; Leathern finished with a staggering .459 average, while Becher came in with a great .245. Meagan Tucker, Jessica Smith, and Jones each contributed six kills in the match. Defensively, Becher and Kaci Loeffler held the fort, amassing 13 and 10 digs apiece.Chowan College played host to Guilford two days later, and the Quakers were eager to right the ship and earn a victory. The Quakers started off slowly, dropping a very sloppy game one 29-31. That loss seemed to wake Guilford up, and the Quakers played some very good volleyball the rest of the way, winning the final three games 30-22, 30-19, 30-19, and taking the match 3-1! The losing streak came to an end, and needless to say, it was a pleasant bus-trip home. Once again Becca Jones led the offense, handing out 38 assists, while Leathern helped, putting away 22 kills. Kaci Loeffler found her legs and recorded a career high eight kills, but her night was defined more by an incredible serve reception evening, as she posted a 2.71! The spark that really set off the Quakers was the effort of outside hitter Jenny Conner, who posted five kill, eight digs, and eight service points, including one ace. Guilford served well as a team, making almost 89% of their serves, while acing Chowan 12 times. Leathern chipped in with four aces, while libero Taylor Brown and Loeffler nearly matched that effort with three of their own.Defensively, Brown and Jones led the way in the digs department with 11 and 10 respectively. With her assists and digs totals, Jones posted her first collegiate double-double. Meagan Tucker and Brittani Leathern patrolled the net, each recording two block assists. It was a great team effort, and a win well deserved and enjoyed by the team after a very tough stretch of the season.
