SEPTEMBER 20, 2005 "BETTER EVERYDAY" The Official Newsletter of Guilford College Volleyball Important Dates 9/20 vs. Emory & Henry 6:30 PM 9/22 @ Chowan 7:00 PM
The Skids The Guilford Volleyball Team has been battling a five-match slide over the last two weeks. At the root of this downswing are many factors. Adjustment to each other on the court, traveling to away matches, adjustment to college-life, and all its trappings are just a few of the contributing factors. Most of the players are all freshmen, and all are battling their own learning curves one way or another. To say that frustration hasn’t affected this team would be an outright lie. Most of the team’s members have come from very successful high school programs that reached their sustained successes as the team’s core players strengthened their on-court relationships over several years playing together. This Guilford team is still coming together and has yet to establish that trust in one another to play consistent ball. Nevertheless, they continue to work on it everyday they are together. Many goals were laid before this team at the beginning of the season. After a careful look, the coaching staff has decided that one goal will do for the rest of the season: finish in the top eight in the conference and play in the ODAC Tournament the first weekend in November. Anything else will be icing on our cake.
Tonight The Quakers look to turn around their recent skid tonight at Ragan Brown Field House when they host Emory & Henry at 6:30 PM. This will be the second meeting in as many weeks with the Lady Wasps, who defeated Guilford at the Greensboro College Tournament. There is hope for the Quakers as both Becca Jones and Brittani Leathern will be in the lineup as the match begins. Both missed the September 9th bout with illness and injury respectively. This match promises to be a much better contested competition than at their previous meeting. Yesterday’s practice was very intense and Guilford looks to bring all of that and more to the floor tonight as they attempt to give E & H a taste of their own medicine. After a half-hour team meeting yesterday, look for improved efforts from each member of the team.
Website Update The Sports Information Office at Guilford, under the direction of Dave Walters and assisted by Matt Grasso has added the players’ individual headshots to the Roster section of the Guilford College Volleyball website, and updated the bios of each player.
More Information As always, more information, including complete match statistics can be found on the website.
