SALISBURY, NC Second-seeded Catawba College used a pair of second-half goals to defeated visiting Mars Hill 2-0 in first round action of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Mens Soccer Tournament on Tuesday night at Frock Field. The 23rd-ranked Indians, who improve to 13-4-1 overall, advance to face Lenoir-Rhyne in a Friday semifinal match to be held at Wingate University. The Lions, seeded seventh, end their season at 5-10-2.
Catawba, who played shorthanded after the suspension of nine players, including six starters, for violating a team policy, got on the board just past the hour on a tally by senior Zay-Zay Gilewala (Monrovia, LIBERIA). Garth McCormack (Charlotte, NC) took a pass and played past a defender then slotted a ball to Gilewala, who dribbled in from 35 yards out and beat the Lion keeper.
The Indians got an insurance goal on an own goal in the 65th, when Nathan Zuzgas (Troy, MI) corner kick deflected off a Lion defender into the net. Both teams had several chances to score in the opening half, the best came off the foot of Gilewala as he hit a shot off the crossbar six minutes into the match.
