October 25, 2005 "BETTER EVERYDAY" The Official Newsletter of Guilford College Volleyball Important Dates 10/26 vs. Bridgewater College 6:30 PM 10/29 vs. Sweet Briar 11:00 AM
Important Week Guilford enters its final week of the regular season needing to win one of two of its remaining matches to earn a berth into the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Volleyball Tournament. Wednesday’s match up with the Eagles of Bridgewater College (BC) will be the second meeting of the 2005 season. Guilford met BC on the second day of the Guilford College Invitational Tournament in Greensboro on October 8. A tired and hurt Quakers squad was easily dispatched in three games by the eventual tournament champions. Guilford looks to be healthy and ready to play after a long weekend away from campus for Fall Break. Saturday’s match against the Vixens of Sweet Briar College will conclude the regular season. Win Stops Skid Last Tuesday’s defeat of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College stopped Guilford’s six match losing streak. The Quakers had not put a "W" in the win column since defeating Piedmont College in their first match of the Guilford Invitational. Emily Becher’s 12 kills and three aces paced the win over the visiting Wildcats. Freshman setter Becca Jones posted another double-double, dishing out 31 dimes while picking up 11 digs. Kaci Loeffler kept up with the Jones, also tallying 11 digs. The win kept the team’s goal of ODAC Tournament play alive for the remainder of the season. Team Retreat Before being released for Fall Break by the coaches, the Guilford Volleyball Team traveled to nearby Quaker Lake for an overnight team-bonding retreat. The highlight of the trip included an afternoon spent on the retreat’s 55-foot climbing tower and swing. After a quick safety lesson from the climbing tower supervisors, the girls were on their way to the top. Brittani Leathern, Becca Jones, Emily Becher, Casey Lockhart, Kaci Loeffler, Jennifer Treiber, Taylor Brown, and Coach Dellinger all made the journey to the top. Among the more interesting sounds of the afternoon was the variety of screams echoing throughout the camp ground as the girls released themselves on the swing. Strapped into a harness, each individual was hoisted about 25 feet above the ground by their teammates via rope and pulley, and then released themselves into a free fall!Hungry after achieving so much on the climbing tower, the girls returned to the cabin for a dinner prepared by Jess Smith. After clean-up, the team spent the evening doing several team bonding exercises and a personality test. And no camp experience would be complete without the eating of S’mores, which the whole team handled, no problem!More Information As always, more information, including complete match statistics can be found on the website.
