DeSales Cruises past Moravian, 4-0, Record Third Straight
Shutout
Emmaus, PA, (October 27, 2005) The DeSales University
mens soccer team posted its third straight shutout on Thursday evening,
cruising past local rival Moravian College, 4-0, in non-conference action on
Memorial Field at Emmaus High School.
The game was moved to Emmaus due to poor field conditions resulting from the
rain over the weekend and at the start of the week. Sophomore Rusty
Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) recorded his eighth shutout of the
season, tying the single-season record for shutouts. He made two stops and
will have a chance to break the single-season mark this Sunday at Lycoming
College.
Riedmiller owes some of the credit to his defensive teammates who have been
stellar all year long and again on Thursday limiting the Greyhounds (5-11-2
overall) to just two shots on goal, both of which were stopped by Riedmiller.
As a team, the Bulldogs entered the week ranked 14th
in the country in goals against average and have lowered that mark to 0.48 with
the two shutouts this week.
On the offensive side of things, junior Randy Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower
Cape May) scored the eventual game-winner on an unassisted tally, his 14th
of the season, at the 34:15 mark of the first half. The Bulldogs (12-2-2
overall) led 2-0 at the half as freshman Dustin Sturm (North Cape May,
NJ/Lower Cape May) scored his third of the season off an assist from fellow
freshman Tim Hall (Montclair, VA/Bishop Ireton).
In the second half, freshman Chris Ravita (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon)
was the recipient of a favorable bounce as his free kick pass into the box just
above the penalty mark was re-directed by a Moravian defenders head as he
attempted to clear the ball from the offensive zone. The ball skidded off
the defenders head and just over the hand of the Greyhound goalkeeper and
into the net. By rule, Ravita is awarded a goal for on the play, his first
of the season.
The scoring was capped off at the 78:22 mark as sophomore Kyle Moore
(Hockessin, DE/Salesianum)scored his first marker of the season by knocking
a shot past MCs goalie off a long thru pass from fellow sophomore Antony
May (Lowell, MA/Lowell Catholic) who received an assist on the play.
DSU out-shot Moravian 14-8 in the game and each team had two corner kicks.
Ian Andrew Nuno made three stops for the Greyhounds in between the pipes.
DeSales returns to action on Sunday, October 30th
as they travel to Lycoming College for the final Freedom Conference game of the
regular season. The Bulldogs need a win to earn the #1 seed and home field
advantage in next weeks playoffs, while a loss could drop them as low as
the #3 seed and without a home playoff game.
