CCCC,0000,0000>Jackie Ciconte<?/color> scored the game-winning goal in
the Terrapin field hockey team's 2-1 win over previously unbeaten American last
week, earning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for the final
week of the regular season.
With the score tied at 1-1 late in the first half, Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.), a
senior forward, converted her only shot of the game to put the third-ranked
Terps on top 2-1. Maryland then held on for the win over the Eagles, who were
ranked fifth in the nation at the time of the meeting. The goal was the 50th of
her career, moving her into eighth place on Maryland's all-time goals scored
list.
Ciconte leads the team with 16 goals on the season, one short of her personal
best. She is ranked in the top 10 in the nation in that category, as the
Terrapin offense is rated 11th.
The Terrapins wrapped up their season with a 17-2 record, including a 4-1 mark
in ACC play. Maryland returns to action as the No. 2 seed at the ACC Field
Hockey Championship, which will be held on its campus on Nov. 3, 4 and 6. The
Terps will take on either Duke or Virginia on Friday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m.
