William Penn 41 Hodgson 24 |
|
by Marshal Manlove
2-5-00
The Hodgson Silver Eagles, last years number one ranked team which hadn't lost to a
Delaware team head to head since the 95-96 season, hosted the powerful and determined
Colonials of William Penn. The Colonials were looking to defeat Hodgson for the first time
since they started wrestling against each other four years ago. Both teams came in
undefeated and it was William Penn who emerged as a 10-0 juggernaut with one major dual
meet left before the championships.
The Colonials won 9 of the 13 matchups in the afternoon get-together. All four
Hodgson victories came via pin with Jordan Sianni at 112, Ryan Smith at 52, Derek Davis at
171, and Wayne Zenorini at heavyweight providing cause to cheer for the Eagle fans. But
Hodgson was only in this match briefly after the Sianni win. Colonial returning State
Champion Greq Quailes was back in the lineup this week after missing a few matches with an
injury. He won a major decision over Kevin Woodland which provided 4 points and a 7-6 lead
for William Penn after that 119 pound match. From there, William Penn didn't look back.
Shawn Taylor won big at 125, and then Harry Kettner won a key overtime victory at 130
against Mike Welch in overtime that appeared to take the hope out of the Silver Eagles on
the sideline. Kettner said "I wrestled Welch in the Hammond tournament and he beat me
1-0. I had to get ready in the (wrestling) room and come out aggressive today."
Two pins and 12 points were notched by Shawan Thompson and Sophomore Joe Ferrara.
Another key win at 145 by James Fromal came before Hodgson would score again. The Fromal
victory over Mark Rispoli was disheartening for Hodgson because it was so lopsided against
a wrestler who normally scores 5-6 points from that slot.
With the score 31-6, Ryan Smith gave Hodgson a glimmer of hope when he pinned
Stoney Graves, but they would need to win the rest of the matches with 3 pins tossed in to
do it. Ray Calloway stopped all the sideline mathematics when he defeated John Kerr at 160
16-4.
Colonial head coach Jack Holloway said with a smile "We hadn't won a big match
in a few years. We owed Hodgson one. Jerry (Lamey, Hodgsons head coach) cant win them
all." Lamey wrestled for William Penn and coach Holloway and his program models that
of the Colonials. A great program to model with the tradition and championships behind
them. A program that heads to the match of the year this coming Thursday in Pike Creek
against the Spartans of St Marks, the three-time defending Division 1 dual meet state
champions.
