Softball: Caravel vs St.
Elizabeth 4-27-00 |
|
by Marshal Manlove
main sports dude Megan
Richardson blasted a solo homerun for Caravel to provide all the offense that Caravel
would need to hold off Kim Joyce and the Vikings of St. Elizabeth 3-0.
The junior centerfielder ripped a fifth-inning Joyce fastball deep over
leftfielder Jenna Mullen's head. The lightning quick all-stater never broke stride after
watching the flight of her smash even though she had the green light to go for four from
3rd base coach, and head coach, Steve Baker.
"I don't know if I could have stopped if I wanted to," said
Richardson afterwards. "I didn't see where the ball was, so I just kept
running."
Richardson bowled into Viking catcher Kelly Hoisington well ahead of the
relay throw home, and was easily safe for an in-the-park homerun.
Joyce didn't recover well after the out. The sophomore fireballer allowed
two more runs in the sixth inning. Coupled with the homerun ball, she lost her composure
after her own groundout ended a Viking chance at a rally in the top of the sixth.
Nancy Tokar, the Caravel catcher, drove in the two runs in the Buc half of
the sixth. Erin McGlynn walked to lead off and then the two Niggebrugge sisters, Alexis
and Ashley reached on infield singles. Tokar poked a two-strike pitch off the end of her
bat past the drawn-in first baseman, Heather Morgan, which plated McGlynn and Alexis for
some insurance. Tokar said, "I was shocked. It (the pitch) was outside, and I just
got enough of it."
Meanwhile, Jackie Homiak, the sophomore two-time all-state first-team
pitcher, was stellar on the mound. She pitched a three-hit shutout striking out eight
batters.
St. E's only scoring opportunity came in the sixth. After Hoisington reached
on an error, a Kelly Nepi single behind her into rightfield was negated when Hoisington
was called out for leaving first base too soon on the hit and run attempt. Nepi single
again but was erased when Joyce grounded out to end any threat.
#3 Caravel improved to 8-1 overall and the #6 Vikings dropped to 7-3.
