Softball: Mt Pleasant vs
Hodgson 4-13-00 |
|
by Marshal Manlove
main sports dude Hodgson
Vo-Tech took a step toward achieving
its goal of becoming the Blue Hen Conference Flight B
Softball Champs when they knocked off the 5th ranked Green Knights (5-1) of Mt Pleasant
4-1.
Hodgson (7-0, 5-0 BHC) had big hits from the bottom part of the order in a 3
run fourth inning which proved to be the difference.
With the bases loaded, two outs, and two strikes, the 4'7"
centerfielder, Jenna Billick, stroked a Texas
league base hit
to centerfield to score the
second run of the game.
Number-nine hitter Andrea Kendall followed with a hit similar to the one
before, but this time two more runs crossed the plate.
The Silver Eagles rode the back of Annie Price on the mound. She was perfect
through four innings and had eight strikeouts in the game. The perfect game was lost on
her only walk of the game, and the first hit came in the fifth on a bunt. Price only gave
up four hits total; one of the other hits was a bunt single also.
Hodgson broke out on top in the second inning when Senior
third baseman
Josie
Harris smashed a single to left that Green Knight Kristie Quigley misplayed. Harris landed
on third with no outs and was driven home on a groundout by Andrea Slifer on the very next
play.
Mount managed to scratch out a run to break up the shut-out bid by
Price in the sixth. Pitcher and leadoff hitter Kristie Franks hit a single for MPH and
later scored on an Andrea Schlezes bunt single.
The HVT staff attributes this win to the extra work on their hitting
so far this year. "These girls stay after practice and hit," said Asst. Coach
Tim Wampler. "They're dedication is paying off."
Head Coach Jack Short agreed. "They set a goal to win Flight B,
and they have been putting the effort out there to do it. They have a great
attitude."
Leftfielder and Co-Captain Andrea Kendall said, "Not only are we
hitting better, but our spirit is better. The old Hodgson is gone. We come out everyday
ready to fight. Flight B is out there. We can take it as well as any other team."
Josie Harris, another captain, was equally as positive. "We proved
today that we can play with anybody."
Should Hodgson win Flight B, it would give them their first ever berth
to the state softball tournament which begins in just a few weeks.
