The first big meet of the outdoor was held at Christiana High
School on Saturday. 22 schools from Delaware and Pennsylvania competed in the fourth of
this series.
Newark won the boys team title due to two disqualifications in races
won easily by Salesianum. The Sals won both the 4x800 and the Distance Medley relays but
handoff zone violations cost the team 20 overall points. St Marks and Brandywine were
awarded the first place medals in those races because of the turn of events.
Newark's Jason Forbes was the key factor in the team win. He won both
the Triple Jump and the Long Jump for 10 points each, and then anchored the third place
4x100 team. Forbes was dealing with some pain during the day. He said, "I
do as
well as I wanted to today because my ankle was bothering me. I was lucky to win it them
(the jumps) by a few inches."
Dover's Jason Lilly, a 15 year old sophomore, continued to make impressions
on the track. He was part of the Senators 4x200 and Sprint Medley winning tams and also
anchored the 2nd place 4x400 team. He pulled his team from behind in his anchor leg of the
4x200 winning the race by 10 feet. The 6'2" 195 pounder noted that, "We have a
new runner to lead off, George Smith. We had to calm him down at the start because he was
all nervous. We did well after that."
The girls team title went to William Penn who were carried by their
field
team of Latifaah Vaughn and Stephanie Crawford, just as they were in the Winter. 34 of
their team total points came in the Shot Put and Discus.
Pole Vaulting was added to the girls list of events just last year. Delaware
girls had a chance to see how it is done when Springfields Sarah Dougherty cleared
10'0", a full foot over the best Delaware vault to date, held by the second place
finisher in the relays, Reagon Hastings from Seaford.
In the girls 4x800, Ursuline's Kristin McGough took the anchor baton from
Colleen Taylor and trailed Brandwines distance state champions Jenn Kutney by 15 yards.
But McGough, a state champion herself, quickly ate up the difference and guided the
Raiders to a comfortable 15 yard margin of victory.
The meet was well run and disciplined. Meet coordinator and Viking track
coach David Jones thought that "Its running very well. I think the kids are having a
good time. Our goal is to get 40 teams to this meet every year, and if the schools see
that they can have fun, we'll get more teams here."
The Christiana event will have some trouble with New Jersey and Maryland
participation. New Jersey's track season
started yet and teams
allowed to
compete here until it does. Large early season events in Maryland keep Marylanders home to
compete. But if Jones' and his group can continue their solid efforts and receive the help
in both labor and sponsorship, this event will continue to flourish.
