The State High School
Basketball Championships |

by Marshal Manlove
editor There was one high school basketball game left to play for 26 senior
girl all-star players and it was the Blue-Gold game held for the first time ever at the
Bob Carpenter Center in Newark.
The Blue team was comprised of all Northern Delaware teams and featured
three first team all-state players; Michelle Whalen from William Penn, Tracey Howell from
AI duPont, and LaShanda Simpson from Glasgow. The efforts from all three proved to be
overwhelming for the Gold as they rolled to an 88-54 victory.
Howell led all scorers with 22 points and she also blocked five shots. Whalen
was second with 14 points and Simpson scored 13.
The Colonials Co-Captain Michelle Whalen considered being able to play an honor.
"Playing in the blue/gold game at the bob carpenter center gives the state's top
senior players the opportunity to end their high school basketball career on a high note.
regardless of who wins or loses, they are all champions."
Archmere's Kenna Healy was injured but started for the tip-off and promptly removed
so she was able to be listed in the box score. Healy suffered a strained ligament in her
knee and the beginning of her soccer season, where she is a goalie for the Auks, will be
delayed.
The Gold team was paced by a 14 point game by St Marks Erin Calloway. Gold
also had three other Northern players on the squad; Lisa Krzywicki from St Marks, Katie
Orga from Ursuline, and Dana Berry from Mt Pleasant. They chipped in 13 more points
combined for the Gold.
There was an injury scare for Erin Calloway when she collided with teammate Tameka
Ross from Seaford. Her knee briefly hyper-extended and she needed a bit of assistance to
come off the court, but fortunately after some icing, she returned to play without any
apparent lasting damage.
The downstate contingent was paced by Ross. She scored 7 points, all in the second
half, including one three-pointer. Cape's Julie Parseghian scored six and Woodbridge's
Angie Rafail scored six.
The half time activities included a three-point shooting contest between Whalen and
Ursulines Katie Orga, both close friends. That was about all that was close though, since
Whalen outscored the Raider guard 10-2.
LaShanda Simpson defeated Dana Berry in a free-throw contest 14-12. Both contests
were one-minute in length.
A near capacity crowd was on hand which included a large group of guests courtesy
of a variety of sponsors. This change of venue and purpose is a winning idea which
is long overdue in being presented in this manner. All-star games always seem to work
better on the basketball court than they do anywhere else.
