Wrestling   #10 Newark 32   #6 Howard 25

 by Marshal Manlove                                                                      1-22-00

This became the game of the week after the St Marks-William Penn dual meet was cancelled due to sickness and two missed practices due to the Blizzard of '00 (all four inches of it). Newarks win over Sallies last Saturday 30-26 catapulted them into the Delaware Sports top ten. Howard entered 5-0 and with high hopes for entering the dual meet state championships in Division Two.
Two decisions at 103 and 112 cancelled each other out right away. James Vitek scored a near fall at 119 at the buzzer to give Newark a 5 point tech fall over Anthony Austin. Howards Oliver Marsh could only squeeze out a 9-5 decision over Chris Vitale at 125 and left the Wildcats down by two with 9 bouts remaining. A Stephen Wooldridge pin and and a Chris Hudson decision left Howard trailing by 12 but they picked up an unexpected win at 140 to close the gap to 9. But Jeff Hudsons 27 second pin put pressure on the undefeated Cats. Howard Co-Captain Corey Campbell stepped up with a pin at 152, but then came the match of the day and the pivotal bout at 160 between Newarks Bob Eno, and Howards Luis Maleno. Two furious exchanges at two points in the match excited the crowd. Both flurries were the result of equalizing holds that enabled each wrestler to tilt each other back and forth. It was Eno with the last tilt who scored three back points at the buzzer to notch the key win for Newark. The Jackets lead 27-15.
Eugene McManus beat Newarks John Brennan at 171 13-4 leaving Howard within striking distance. They would need a pin and a decision to come from behind. But it wouldnt even come down to the heavyweight match because Newarks Bran Walker pinned in the second period to clinch the match for Newark Merion Rodgers scored a pin at heavyweight for Howard, but it was not enough. Newark scored the minor upset 32-25.
Bob Eno was the outstanding wrestler for the match with his 15-13 win at 160. Newark improves to 5-1 and Howard falls to 5-1.
