Hillers and Raiders Put On Early Season Show Print E-mail
By The UFO

Tower Hill 3
Concord 2

What a match! Sixty magnificent minutes of end-to-end, non-stop action. Paige Schmidt won it for Tower on a PC in the dying minutes but not before Concord had the Hillers down 2-1 late, very late.

The Hillers struck early through Leigh Giacco but this was not a foreshadowing, far from it. Concord’s pace on attack was devastating, especially Kelly Fox and Kim Schlezes. Brandywine and Mount Pleasant will rue the day these legacies strayed. Time and again a Tower attack would break down and in an instant the Raiders would be fast breaking with numbers in the other direction. After several Concord near misses, Ms Fox equalized on just such a Raider riposte.

At the intermission it was back to the drawing board for Tower and the second stanza commenced with new personnel in a new, more defensive alignment. Still Concord kept coming. More fast breaks, more good chances. The Raiders were rewarded when a thrust down the right flank saw the ball crossed to Jackie Allmond who made no mistake. Ms. Allmond has faced the Hillers three times and scored in each encounter. That’s a claim, few, if any, others can make.

The crowd sensed an upset but Tower fought back like champions and Alex Albright finished a Tower fast break to level the game at two. Memories immediately recalled last season’s 3-2 OT encounter but Paige had other ideas. All afternoon she was dangerous on the PC but her shots were uncharacteristically high and battered the Concord defenders. When the Hillers forced a series of late corners, Concord was living on borrowed time. The inevitable finally happened as a Schmidt shot from the top of the circle found the mark.

The Raiders immediately resumed the attack, winning a corner of their own, but the restart went to midfield and the whistle soon sounded ending a sensational sporting spectacle.

Archmere 1
Tower Hill 4

Game three is too early for a classic #1 vs #3 confrontation and we didn’t get one. The Hillers practiced their penalty corners all afternoon converting 4 of 28, three by Paige. Tower’s PCs are a bit one-dimensional this season. Archmere defended gamely and GK Lauren Tosi was outstanding but the Auks were betrayed by their 16-yard hits. The 16-yard hit must relieve the pressure not turn the ball over inside the 25. The game was as one-sided as the stats would indicate, shots 27-2, corners 28-4, saves 16-0!

Finally! Seaford fell behind early on Shannon Bradley’s goal and when Stephanie Taylor made it 2-0 just before the interval, the pessimists were muttering, "Here we go again." But the Jays rallied, twice. Sam Fitzgerald and Heather Bleile made it 2-2 before Erin Marihugh gave Penn their second lead of the game with only six minutes remaining. Bitty Hood notched the season’s most dramatic goal with only one tick left on the clock. Six minutes into extra time, Heather Bleile struck again and the Jays had at last taken flight.

St Andrew’s 0 (OT)
Milford 1

Barbara Fry bagged her second game-winner of the season, from Holly Van Auken. A red-hot keeper, Lindsey Moffet, offset the Cardinals’ edge in shots and corners.

Dover 1 (OT)
Sanford 1

Sanford’s’ goal machine, Meghan Hihn and Amanda Devine exchanged first-half tallies. The Warriors kept knock, knock, knockin’ on Dover’s door in the second half but couldn’t get another. Watching Sanford is watching "The Young and the Restless."

They are very young, with only one senior on the field, and very quick to the ball, especially in the front and midfield. For a young team, they are surprisingly resilient and survived three late body blows Saturday. Their senior scorer was sidelined for a stretch by a high ball (high free hits blighted an otherwise well played game), a second player was carried off after OT collision and a third was yellow carded, rather harshly, in OT, forcing them to play a man down for half of the extra ten minutes. Sanford is an exciting team, very much on the come. The Senators are now 2-1-3 with three ties 1-1.

A rare, non-Rullo appearance in NCC saw the Vikings head home empty-handed despite an edge in possession and territory, shots and corners. An edge, which strangely didn’t generate the scoring chances one would expect. In fact, the most dangerous moment occurred just before halftime when a WCS shot rocketed across the goalmouth just missing the open corner. Cape dodged a second-half moment of menace when an unusual "delay of game" penalty reversed a 16 yard hit and gave the Warriors a free hit into the circle, catching the Viking defense unaware. Seniors were in short supply in the overtime as Cape continued to carry the play but the Warrior defense kept them at bay.

The Concord Raiders bring out the best in CA keeper Megan Manubay. Last season MM blanked Concord 1-0, making a season-high 18 saves while facing 24 shots and 25 corners. 2003 saw more of the same.
