June 24, 2000: The Blue-Gold Football Game

Certainly, with players from Newark, Middletown, Caesar Rodney, and St. Mark's, the Gold was the favorite to win the 45th annual Blue-Gold All-Star football game. They did not fail to produce a victory as they beat the Blue 22-12 scoring all of their points in the first half.
The Blue team did have the state's best passer and first team all-state quarterback on their side. Brandywine's Jace Carletti put Blue on the board first as he connected with Dickinson's Josh Nelson on a 23 yard touchdown play.
The Gold team happened to have the best lineman in the nation however, and they piled up 188 rushing yards behind Newark's Kwame Harris, who won the game's outstanding lineman award. Harris was joined on the line by schoolmate Micah German; both huge young men are headed west to play for the Pac-10 football conference in the Fall.
The Gold also had Caesar Rodney's Robert Young, the exciting Rider tailback. Young led all rushers with 96 yards in the game. They also had the 1999 Delaware Sports Athlete of the Year, Brandon Brown from Middletown, who picked up 46 yards and scored two points on an extra point conversion.
Glasgow's head coach Mark Delpercio started his own quarterback Matt Folke who hit the Riders Jon Berry with a 52 yard touchdown strike to match the Blue's first touchdown. Berry was named the game's MVP for his two touchdowns in the game. The second came in the second quarter when he hauled in a David Patterson (St. Andrews) pass for a 25 yard score.
For Berry it was a sweet game. "It meant alot for me to be here and to play in this game. The playoff game (against St. Mark's in December) still runs through my mind. But all the hard work paid off today for me. It feels good to win the award and score two touchdowns."
Woodbridge quarterback Jason Rust, who piloted his Blue Raiders to an undefeated regular season, scored the other Gold touchdown on a one yard run in the first quarter. The play was set up by fake punt that Young ran 45 yards down to the one yard line.
Carletti struck again for Blue in the third quarter to close out the scoring. He hit Caravel's Antoine Newsome for a 60 yard touchdown. Carletti piled up 165 of  Blue's 175 yards passing.
Carletti, heading for Salisbury State in the Fall to play both football and baseball, echoed the sentiments of most of the players present at the game. "It's an honor to be here and play for this cause. It's never fun to lose, but this isn't about winning or losing today."
