Girls Basketball   Caravel vs Ursuline

 by Marshal Manlove                               2-14-00

Two days after dropping a top-five contest against AI duPont, the third ranked Bucaneers of Caravel hosted the #4 Raiders of Ursuline Academy at their home court in Bear.
The Bucs had never beaten Ursuline before and were again without the services of their starting point guard Kim Helm, who will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Head coach Joe Pennell, who coached Ursuline to two state championships, needed to rely on Sophomore point guard Courtnee Dickson off the bench to pace Caravel to victory 59-49. Dickson scored 11 points on 5 for 9 shooting from the field and one three point shot. Junior center Tiara Malcom poured in a game high 23 points for Caravel in a head to head matchup with Raider junior star center Alexis Henderson who scored 19 to lead UA.
Caravel jumped ahead 14-5 after the first quarter and led at one point in the first half by 16. Pennell remarked "Not to take anything away from AI DuPont, but the kids knew that was not one of our better performances on Saturday. They wanted to show everybody tonight they are better than that."
Buc forward Davineia Payne added 12 points for Caravel who improved to 12-7 with the win. Ursuline fell to 10-9 and are 4-2 in the Catholic Conference, second to the number one ranked Spartans of St Marks.
