Delaware Sports Game of the Week

Girls Basketball   #1 St Marks 77   #7 Caesar Rodney 23

 by Marshal Manlove                                            1-29-00

What began as an intriguing match-up between the upstate and downstate powerhouse girls basketball teams quickly became a laugher. The Spartans (13-1), playing at home but outsized, utilized their relentless defense to wipe out the previously unbeaten Riders 77-23.
St Marks was led offensively by Lisa Krzywicki and Erin Calloway who each scored 16 points. Krzywicki racked up 10 first quarter points. She said, "We didn't really know anything about them other than they were bigger than us." But the Riders size never was a factor. Cherise Franklin was the Riders leading scorer with 11 points but only managed 4 in the first half. A series of traps and full court presses caused numerous Rider turnovers which the talented Spartans were able to capitalize offensively with. The other Spartan captain, point guard Michelle Albanese was a thorn in seemingly every side of the Riders offensive plays. The emotional leader only scored 4 points in this game, but her point play helped enable her number one ranked team pour on the offense. Tracee Mosch added 13 first half points; Freshman Christine Armstrong scored 11 and Lindsay Hegeman poured in 12 for St Marks.
