Who’s in, who’s out

There are four changes from the tournament field of 2004. Charter, Dover, Lake Forest and Wilmington Christian are out, WCS for the first time since 1987 and Charter under unusual circumstances. Indian River and Seaford return after one-year absences. Like Sussex Tech and Charter last year, Middletown and Padua are tournament first timers.

The Committee appears to have used the results of 12 Blue Hen Conference games rather than 7 Blue Hen A games to determine the BHA champions. William Penn’s record was 9-3 versus the entire BHC, Charter’s 7-5. Both teams were 6-1 against BHA opponents with Charter having the tie breaker with a win over Penn.

By Conference

The Henlopen leads with six, followed by the Blue Hen with five, the Catholic with three and the Independent with two. The HC, BHC and IC all have the same number of teams as last year. The CC picked up a third team this year for their most since 1996. There are no non-conference teams in the tournament for the first time since 1986

Brackets/Match ups

The brackets break down on geographic lines with five of the six Henlopen teams in the lower bracket.

Only two regular season rematches: Concord vs. William Penn and Caesar Rodney vs. Seaford. In last year’s first round, five of the eight matches were return engagements, with the regular season winner prevailing in all five. St Mark’s vs. Sussex Tech is a rerun of a 2004 first round game, also played at ST. Cape Henlopen was in line to host a first round game for the sixth consecutive year but the game will be played at Dover.

First Round Upsets?

Over the past ten tournaments (1995-2004), there have been 17 first round upsets. We have not had any for the past two seasons, so we may be due. As you can see below, they tend to come in clusters.

    1. 2
    2. 3
    3. 0
    4. 0
    5. 2
    6. 2
    7. 4
    8. 4
    9. 0
    10. 0

Surprisingly the most common upset is not the 8/9 game:

1/16 1

2/15 0

3/14 0

4/13 3

5/12 2

6/11 3

7/10 6

8/9 2

In this year’s field, three of the lower seeded schools have pulled off first round upsets over the past ten years, while three of the higher seeded schools have been upset, one of them twice.
